Canada's national game was brought to North America from the Scottish highlands. Shinty, or camanachd in Gaelic, is the most popular Celtic-originated pastime . Shinty is a field game using sticks and a wooden ball. The game was played on ice in Canada before the word hockey was even used.                                          

 Scottish Canadians are well represented in the National Hockey League, accounting for about a quarter of all players.            

 Bobby Orr, whose ancestors are Scottish, was arguably the greatest player in Hockey history. He is certainly one of the great defensemen, as his rushing style redefined the position, turning it into a partly offensive one. Orr was voted Most Valuable Player three times and best defenseman eight consecutive years.
