An Immigrant's Tale

May 3rd is Tom Doran's birthday. In celebration I'm posting whatever information I have about where Tom's father and uncles grew up in Glasgow. According to Tom THIS is "The area where my father grew up." "Carrick Street started off this street - Broomielaw, right on the water."

HERE is "An old photo of the street my father was born and lived on till he came to America." "..not that building of course, but the street certainly."

Tom wrote: "The street running parallel with the river is called the Broomielaw. Carrick, Brown and McAlpine are all streets the family lived on at one point or another. One or two blocks apart at most."

According to Tom his Grandfather and Uncles were rough fellows. When he found this article about The Battle of George Square he wrote: "I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out my Grandfather was involved in this. I'd be more surprised if I found out he wasn't." Fortunately, for those of us who knew Tom he was a wonderful, kind and generous person. Of course, having inherited his Scottish temperament from his father and uncles he didn't suffer fools gladly.

Tom's father and uncles traveled to the United States in 1930 on the S.S. Transylvania from Glasgow. Once they landed they lived in Port Chester, New York. Tom's father - before he became a citizen of the United States - served during World War ll in the Pacific Theater.

I just made this for fun. Tom and I (as LEGO figures) celebrating his birthday.

Scotland got more than two-thirds of its electricity from green sources in 2017

For years Scotland has been successfully applying alternative sources for energy and it's really something to celebrate. This should be no surprise to those see Scotland as being forward thinking and progressive. It's nice to see coal becoming extinct as an energy source. Some people may "complain" about the turbines but it's a beautiful sight to those of us who love clean air to breath.

Read this Article in the Independent to get the details.
