OFF THE BEATEN PATH

How far off the beaten path can we go? Well, most of us know there is a place called “Scotland” – actually several – but did you know there are places called Scotia? Not just Nova Scotia, but Scotia – and just to prove it – here is proof from the United States Post office (just like in the original film version of Miracle on 34th Street):

As time goes on we hope to have more of these postmarks from around the US in our “Off the Beaten Path” column. The number of towns with Scottish names is staggering and indicates to some degree the impact of the Scots on the United States.
