OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Dalry
Dalry (sounds like the English words “pal-rye” with the second syllable accented) is a small town in Ayrshire, about 25 miles south and west of Glasgow. It is easily accessible by train from Glasgow Central Station or by bus from the Buchanan Bus station. Dalry has a population of about 5,550 people.
There are a number of interesting things to see in Dalry and the surrounding area, but in this issue we will only look at one – the Biggart Fountain:
Biggart Fountain
This fountain sits on the corner of New Street, Town End Street and Aiken Street come together.
The fountain was a gift of Thomas Biggart who presented it to the “inhabitants of Dalry”. A more complete explanation of the fountain and its history can be found on the sign nearby. As can be told from the sign, the area had been involved in spinning and of course, Scotland has long been known for its cloth and weaving trade.
Trinity Church – where the well originally stood
The fountain with its bench provides a pleasant place to sit and rest in Dalry. The nearby community board proclaims “Dalry Conservation Town” and is a place to find out about events taking place in the town.
