There is a distinction to be made between "sadists" who simply want to cause pain and "tops" who take the dominant role in role playing within SM scenes. The same distinction can be made for masochists and bottoms.
Nazi imagery has also been associated (although to a lesser extent) with SM. However, Nazis are often associated with images of "debauchery" and "depravity". Viscinti's The Damned and Fosse's Cabaret are good examples. There are usually images of transvestism, homosexuality and sado-masochism.
The idea of dominance is reflected in the popular culture referring to S/M as "whipe and chains".

S/M here is used here to refer to the role playing kind of relationship in which the bottom controls the scene.
S/M is often associated with a number of fetishes. These include materials such as leather, rubber and denim, and also fetishize symbols of powere which include uniforms, especially those of authority such as military and police.
In addition to S/M there is another form of sexual involvment which is called bondage and discipline (B/D) which some people feel in a part of S/M and others feel is not.
