AMERICAN INDIAN MUSIC AND DANCE

Do all the native peoples of the Americas share the same music and dance styles?

No. Like all other aspects of society and culture there is enormous variation between different peoples. Of course some peoples music is closer to some other peoples music, but in some cases they are widely separated.

Some people say "All the music sounds alike to me". That is a problem with the listener who is inexperienced at listening to the different music styles. In the same way that non-Western people who have little or no experience with Western music think it all sounds the same and can't tell the difference between rock and roll and opera!

One point of interest is that some musicologists feel that there are different styles of music which tend to be similar within the same culture areas. (If you want to know about culture areas, click on the bird, if not just go on reading this page.
